beyond the pale
My work explores how a viewer engages with photographic images, generally portraits. We all have a comfort zone, a place where we feel safe and in control were we are aware of the limits, beyond which there may be chaos and awkwardness.
This series is based on The Dubliners by James Joyce. Every portrait represents the main character from each passage. There is no narrative to link the individual stories, but as natural storytellers we cannot help ourselves – we create our own narrative. The photographic authority forces us to read the images from our own perspective and understand the series as a whole, rather than individual vignettes.
