fusiforms

What do we recognise when we see a blend of many faces ? it is reasonably predictable that we ‘see’ only one face as being dominant. “our study shows that the brain tries to force us to pin a single identity on a face, even if it looks like a mix of two (or more) people we know.” Dr Pia Rotshtein,The Welcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience.

Several regions of the brain respond specifically to facial recognition, one such region is the fusiform gyrus. The identity we pin on these ‘fusiforms’ may well change with time, mood, viewing distance or recent stimulus.
